Appointment Policy

It's important to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. If you need to cancel an appointment for any reason, please give us at least 24 hours’ notice.

Sick Call

  • Dental sick-call patients are seen during normal working hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a walk-in, first-come, first-serve basis.
  • For after-hours dental emergencies and acute dental-related issues, you can contact the Dental Duty Officer at Makalapa BDC at 808-864-4705 or Kaneohe BDC at 808-630-8328.
  • For life-threatening issues, patients should call 911 and/or report to their nearest Emergency Department for immediate evaluation and treatment.

How to Check Your Dental Readiness Classification

  • Check your Individual Medical Readiness status on BUPERS Online to check your dental readiness and when you are due for your annual dental exam.
  • All active duty service members are required by Navy directives to maintain dental readiness to ensure mission readiness and have a dental exam every 12 months.
  • Please contact us as soon as possible for scheduling your dental exam.

Overseas Screening

For signatures on dependent overseas screenings, please bring the following documents for the military dentist to review:

  1. All necessary forms signed by current local civilian dentist
  2. Treatment notes from local civilian dentist
  3. All dental radiographs from local civilian dentist

Dental Hygiene Services

You must have had a dental exam within the past 12 months to schedule your dental hygiene appointment. Dental prophylaxis or ‘dental cleaning’ must be indicated in your current treatment plan to be scheduled for a dental hygiene/cleaning appointment. Appointments for dental cleanings at Makalapa BDC open every Friday afternoon; please call the front desk at Makalapa BDC to schedule your dental hygiene appointment.

Restorative Dentistry and Specialty Care

Comprehensive dental care and specialty dental care in endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery are provided at Naval Health Clinic Hawaii. Depending on the complexity and access to care, patients may be referred to an in-network civilian dental provider for treatment via a referral through the Active Duty Dental Program. All referrals must be preauthorized by a Dental Officer. Unauthorized treatments will result in the patients’ responsibility for cost. Orthodontics and pediatric dentistry are not supported at NHCH. Patients who would like to pursue orthodontic treatment must do so at their own expense; however, it is recommended that you notify and seek chain of command approval before the initiation of any orthodontic treatment since deployable patients are not authorized to undergo elective orthodontic care per BUMEDINST 6670.2A.

Dental Options Outside of Military Dental Clinics

For dental care outside of military dental clinics, TRICARE offers dental coverage for service members, families and survivors. Additionally, retired service members, their families and certain survivors may qualify to purchase dental coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program.
