Red Hill Clinic

The Red Hill Clinic provides medical assessments for all TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries and individuals granted Secretarial Designee status, endorsing symptoms that may be related to the Red Hill fuel release.

If deemed medically necessary, further care will be provided at the Red Hill Clinic at Branch Health Clinic Makalapa, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and at Tripler Army Medical Center, on a space available basis.

People experiencing symptoms are encouraged to call 833-415-3024, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to schedule an appointment.

Do You Have Symptoms?

Common symptoms following exposure to petroleum-contaminated water include, but are not limited to:

Upset stomach
Stomach cramps
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Throat and mouth irritation

Where is the Clinic Located?

The Red Hill Clinic is located at Naval Health Clinic Hawaii’s Branch Health Clinic – Makalapa, on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The clinic offers primary care appointments. Specialty care referrals may be offered on a space-available basis. Access to specialty care is currently limited due to staffing.

How do I qualify for care at the Red Hill Clinic?
You may qualify if you meet one of the following:

o   Permanent residence in housing served by the JBPHH Water Distribution System between Nov. 20, 2021, and March 18, 2022

o   Full- or part-time work in any facility served by the JBPHH Water Distribution System any time between Nov. 20, 2021, and March 18, 2022

o   Attended school or daycare served by JBPHH Water Distribution System any time between Nov. 20, 2021, and March 18, 2022

o   Current resident of military family housing served by the JBPHH Water Distribution System

AND

o   Experiencing persistent, worsening, or new symptoms you attribute to either the November 2021 JP-5 fuel release or current concerns over drinking water quality in military family housing served by the JBPHH Water Distribution System.

Note: If you are not eligible for TRICARE health coverage, the Defense Health Agency is offering Secretarial Designee patients a medical assessment. If you qualify, you may receive additional care at the Red Hill Clinic at Branch Health Clinic Makalapa, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and at Tripler Army Medical Center, when space is available.
How can I make an appointment at the Red Hill Clinic?

I’m a Secretarial Designee. How do I get on base?
Call the central appointment line to complete patient registration. The appointment staff will process your base access during your registration. When going to the Red Hill Clinic for your appointment, you must use the Makalapa Gate entrance.
How will my records be kept?
- Your records will be maintained in MHS GENESIS, the Military Health System’s electronic health record.
How can I get copies of my medical records?
Red Hill Clinic/Tripler Army Medical Center staff can assist you with obtaining your records.
What actions should I take if my symptoms aren’t related to exposure with JP-5 fuel contamination?
- See your primary care provider to investigate other potential causes for your illness.
I’m a Secretarial Designee. Will the Department of Defense pay for my personal doctor to test or assess me?
No.
What if my symptoms continue after getting treatment or after my Secretarial Designee status ends?
After March 10, 2025, your care transitions to your primary care provider. Records are available upon request, so you may provide them to your care team.
As a Secretarial Designee, can I get prescriptions filled at military pharmacies if a Tripler Army Medical Center/Red Hill Clinic provider wrote my prescription?
Yes. If your provider decides you need a prescription, you may fill it at the Makalapa Clinic or Tripler Army Medical Center.
Are pediatricians available at the Red Hill Clinic?
The primary care provider is clinically trained and certified to treat pediatric patients.
Why were the eligibility criteria expanded?
- Current residents of military family housing served by the JBPHH Water Distribution System continue to report symptoms they attribute to fuel contaminated drinking water, even after JBPHH switched the well serving the water distribution system and removed nearly all the fuel from the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility. The DOD is committed to providing the best medically recommended and necessary care to address the health concerns of impacted persons. Expanding Secretarial Designation is an important step in supporting the Red Hill community.
